About the project
This project is Phase 2 of the mechanical development of the TODMO Scoot, a ride-on suitcase for children. David has been selected based on his winning Phase 1 concept. The purpose of Phase 2 is to develop the selected concept into a more detailed, manufacturable and factory-ready mechanical solution. The main priority is the completion of the height-adjustable lid mechanism. The rear parking brake and the attachment/latching of the soft saddle cushion will also be developed. The work should be based on: David’s selected Phase 1 concept The existing TODMO Scoot CAD and STEP files The current product design and dimensions Feedback received from TODMO and the intended manufacturer The external industrial design should remain substantially unchanged unless mechanical or manufacturing requirements make minor adjustments necessary. Scope of work Height-adjustable lid mechanism Complete and refine the selected height-adjustment concept, including but not limited to: Vertical support arms and their integration with the lid Guide tracks and interfaces inside the main suitcase body Predefined locking positions Push-button or lever-operated release mechanism Locking pins, latches, springs and related components Reliable engagement and spring return Stable and synchronized movement on both sides Injection-molding considerations, including part splits, draft, ribs, bosses, wall thickness and assembly access Production assembly sequence and fastening methods The lid must lock securely in its normal lowered position and in the agreed raised positions. The lowered position must support the product’s intended ride-on use. Raised positions are intended primarily as a footrest or leg rest, not as a raised riding position. Rear parking brake Integrate a simple and manufacturable rear brake based on a proven stroller, pram or luggage principle. The solution should include: Foot-operated brake pedal or lever Simultaneous locking of both rear wheels Saddle cushion attachment and latch Complete the mechanism for attaching the soft textile-covered saddle cushion to the lid while allowing access to the compartment below it. Deliverables The final Phase 2 package should include: Updated and fully editable 3D CAD files STEP exports of all updated parts and assemblies Complete assembly model showing all relevant mechanisms Exploded or semi-exploded views Section views showing internal mechanism operation Drawings or illustrations showing locked, released and moving positions Identification of springs, pins, screws, inserts and other standard or purchased parts Key dimensions, clearances and tolerances needed to understand and manufacture the mechanisms Recommended materials for the relevant components Part-split, fastening and assembly recommendations A short list of remaining assumptions, validation requirements and open questions Manufacturer-ready explanation drawings that allow the factory to understand, evaluate and continue the engineering work The files must be sufficiently detailed to serve as the engineering basis for the manufacturer’s final DFM review, tooling quotations and tooling preparation. The objective is to bring the agreed mechanisms as close as reasonably possible to tooling-ready status within the scope of this project. Final release for tooling will remain subject to the manufacturer’s final DFM approval, confirmation of materials and manufacturing processes, any required prototype validation, and approval by TODMO. Factory feedback and revisions Adjustments and new revisions may be required after the manufacturer reviews the design. Reasonable revisions resulting directly from the manufacturer’s initial DFM review are included as part of this project, provided they remain within the agreed scope and selected mechanical concepts. Any substantial scope change, fundamentally new mechanism or major redesign will be discussed and agreed separately before additional work begins. Milestones Milestone 1 – Complete height-adjustable lid mechanism: USD 600 Milestone 2 – Rear parking brake and saddle attachment: USD 200 Total project budget: USD 800 Important design principles The solutions should be simple, robust and suitable for high-volume production. Proven mechanical principles are preferred over complicated mechanisms. The work should aim for: Reliable and intuitive operation Low and cost-effective part count Efficient production assembly Suitability for injection-molded plastic parts Durability under repeated use Child safety Minimal changes to the established product appearance Clear communication with the manufacturer
