Eastern Sierra Road Construction Project Engineer

About the project

Our team is well into an infrastructure improvement project—a new mountain road in the Eastern Sierras of California—and I need an experienced civil project engineer to take charge of daily engineering and coordination tasks through final paving. Scope The design is complete, permits are in hand, and crews are mobilized. Your role is to track progress, perform quantity surveys, communicate with the owner as to timely pay estimates, and support the Superintendent in completing the Project. Key Responsibilities • Review plans, specs, and submittals; flag constructability issues early • Produce and update work-site documents: RFIs, as-built redlines, earthwork take-offs, material quantity logs • Coordinate with survey, geotech, environmental, and utility teams to maintain compliance with Caltrans and county standards • Support maintainencne of the three-week look-ahead and CPM schedules. • Attend progress meetings; document and distribute action items • Monitor costs, change orders, and subcontractor invoices, keeping the client dashboard current Deliverables 1. Weekly progress report (PDF) with updated schedule, quantities, photos, and risk log 2. RFI and submittal register, continuously maintained in Excel/Google Sheets 3. Final turnover package: as-built CAD (Civil 3D), test results, permits close-out documents, and punch-list sign-offs Acceptance Criteria • Reports issued by 5 p.m. every Friday, zero missing line items • Schedule variance < ±5 % for critical path activities • All FHWA QC/QA documentation accepted with no major findings Ideal Experience California PE or EIT working toward licensure, mountain or remote-site roadwork, familiarity with FHWA Standard Specifications, erosion control, and winter shutdown procedures.
