About the project

Fusion 360 Design & CAD Modelling of a Miniature F1 Model Car — STEM Challenge ## Category Product Design / CAD / Mechanical Engineering / Fusion 360 ## Project Overview I'm working on a side project with a friend to design and model a miniature CO2-powered model racing car (STEM Racing) in Autodesk Fusion 360. We need an experienced CAD designer to help us translate our existing design concepts into a fully modelled, competition-compliant car optimised for speed, aerodynamics, and functionality. We already have several design concepts and sketches prepared. A key first deliverable is a feasibility review: we want your expert opinion on whether our ideas can realistically be implemented within the technical rules while maximising performance. The rulebook with Technical Regulations will be shared with the selected freelancer, along with our concepts and reference material. --- ## Scope of Work **1. Concept Feasibility Review** - Review our existing design concepts against the attached technical regulations - Advise which ideas are compliant, which need modification, and which are not feasible - Flag any concepts that risk penalty points, with reference to the specific rule articles **2. Full CAD Modelling in Fusion 360** - Model the complete car body from a single virtual block (as required by the rules — machined from one piece of Model Block material) - Model all assembly components: nose cone, front wing(s), end plates, rear wing assembly, wheel support systems, tether line guides, halo, helmet, and legal ballast container - Ensure the mandatory Halo, helmet, ballast container, and virtual cargo are correctly integrated per the halo-pocket and ballast-container drawings - Correct placement of the power unit cartridge chamber (diameter, depth, angle, safety zone) **3. Compliance Verification** Model must satisfy the key dimensional and classification rules, including but not limited to: - Total width (65–85 mm), total height (max 65 mm), min weight (48 g), track clearance (min 1.5 mm) - Wheelbase, wheel dimensions, opposing-wheel spacing, and wheel visibility rules - Front/rear wing span, chord, thickness, overlap, clear-airflow (5 mm), and visibility rules - Cartridge chamber and cartridge visibility requirements - Halo notch height (34 mm ±1 mm) and halo pocket geometry **4. Performance Optimisation** - Optimise the body and wing geometry for aerodynamics and speed within the legal envelope - Balance weight distribution to meet the minimum-weight and four-wheel-resting requirements - Advise on design features that push the rules for competitive edge without incurring penalties **5. Deliverables** - Editable native Fusion 360 file(s) with a clean, parametric feature tree and named/organised components - Assembly model plus individual component bodies - Engineering drawings suitable for scrutineering: dimensioned, with components identified by hatching/shading/block colour and relevant rule numbers labelled - Realistic 3D renderings of the final car - (Optional / preferred) CAM readiness — model prepared for CNC manufacture from the standard Model Block --- ## Reference Material Provided to Selected Freelancer - Our design concepts, sketches, and ideas - Standard downloadable parts (Model Block, halo, helmet, power pack dimensions) available from the competition site --- ## Ideal Freelancer - Proven expertise in **Autodesk Fusion 360** (parametric modelling, surfacing, assemblies, drawings, rendering) - Experience with **F1 in STEM Challenge** cars or similar aerodynamic/motorsport CAD is a strong plus - Ability to read and interpret a technical rulebook and design to strict tolerances - Understanding of aerodynamics and design-for-manufacture (CNC / CAM) - Clear communicator who can explain trade-offs between compliance and performance --- ## What to Include in Your Proposal 1. A brief note on your relevant Fusion 360 / motorsport CAD experience (portfolio links welcome — especially any F1 in aero work) 2. Your **fixed-price quotation** (or hourly rate + estimated hours), ideally broken down by phase (feasibility review / modelling / drawings + rendering) 3. Your **estimated timeline** with milestones 4. Confirmation you can deliver editable native Fusion 360 files and scrutineering-ready drawings 5. One or two initial questions or observations that show you've understood the brief --- ## Notes This is a collaborative side project — we value a designer who will engage with our concepts rather than just execute blindly. We'd like to start with the feasibility review before committing to the full build, so feel free to quote that as a first milestone. Please share your quotation and estimated timeline. Looking forward to your proposals!
