Foldable Outdoor Game – Product Design, CAD & DFM

About the project

I am developing a portable outdoor golf entertainment game for the Australian market and require an experienced mechanical/product designer to develop the concept into a CAD and engineering package suitable for obtaining manufacturing quotations from China. The product is intended for backyards, camping, parks, BBQs, holidays and social events. It is an entertainment game rather than a professional golf training product. The current concept consists of a lightweight artificial-turf target board with four scoring holes. The board folds approximately in half for compact transport and storage and incorporates simple folding legs. Current approximate dimensions are: • Open: 900 mm × 550 mm • Folded: 450 mm × 550 mm • Target board weight: ≤3 kg if technically and commercially practical • Target complete set weight: ≤5 kg These dimensions are preliminary and may be challenged if a better solution materially improves cost, portability or gameplay. The primary design objectives, in order, are: Low manufacturing cost Low weight Compact packed dimensions Minimum component count Simple and economical assembly Clean, premium appearance Outdoor durability Quick setup and pack-away Materials have deliberately not been finalised. I want the designer to recommend the most economical lightweight construction that achieves adequate rigidity and durability. Standard/off-the-shelf materials, profiles, hinges and fasteners should be preferred where practical to minimise tooling and initial production cost. The visible perimeter should have a clean square/rectangular profile, not a U-shaped edge trim. The two board halves will have artificial turf over the playing surface, with the intention that the turf primarily conceals the centre joint when the board is opened. The designer should propose a practical solution that allows repeated folding without premature turf damage, delamination or a significant ridge in the playing surface. The design should remain deliberately simple. Do not add ball-catching bags/nets, internal storage compartments, decorative mechanisms or other components unless they are technically necessary. Required deliverables: • Parametric 3D CAD model • Open and folded configurations • Dimensioned general arrangement drawings • Exploded assembly drawing • Preliminary BOM • Material and thickness recommendations • Centre hinge/folding detail • Folding-leg mechanism detail • Hole dimensions and locations • Estimated board weight • STEP/STP files for manufacturer quotation • PDF engineering drawings • Native editable CAD files • DFM recommendations identifying opportunities to reduce cost, weight, part count and packed volume • One revision following initial manufacturer feedback This is a Concept CAD + Manufacturer RFQ Package, not final tooling or production documentation. I do not want the supplied concept image simply reproduced in CAD. I am specifically seeking a designer with experience in physical consumer products and DFM who can challenge the construction and recommend simpler or cheaper solutions. Please provide examples of physical products you have designed for manufacture, particularly portable/folding consumer products, sporting equipment or outdoor products. In your proposal, please briefly explain what areas of this concept you would investigate first to reduce manufacturing cost, weight and packed dimensions while maintaining a premium appearance.
